Parents, Guardians, Staff and Students,

As our School Board prepares to approve the academic calendar for the 2027–2028 school year, we want to provide an important update regarding our proposed start and end dates.
For the past couple of academic years, the Minnesota Legislature granted school districts the flexibility to begin the school year on September 1st, prior to Labor Day. Because Labor Day falls relatively late in September 2027 (September 6th), starting after the holiday would significantly push back breaks, semester milestones, and final end dates. To protect our instructional timeline, plan proactively, and provide information to our community. We are recommending that the Board adopt a calendar with a September 1, 2027 start date.

Please note, the 2027-2028 Calendar is pending legislative action. While we are moving ahead with a September 1st start, Minnesota state law defaults to a post-Labor Day start unless a specific legislative exception is active. The state legislature has not yet extended the pre-Labor Day scheduling flexibility to the 2027–2028 school year.

Therefore, the finalized start and end dates on this calendar are contingent upon the Minnesota Legislature passing authorization during their 2027 legislative session.

 ● If the Legislature approves the flexibility: The board-approved calendar will stand      exactly as presented.

● If the Legislature does not act: We will be legally required to adjust the calendar. In that
scenario, school would begin on Tuesday, September 7, 2027 (the day after Labor Day), and
the calendar—including the last day of school—would shift roughly one week later. Extended breaks surrounding holidays would not move.

We are sharing this calendar now to give your family as much baseline structure as possible for your long-term planning. We will closely monitor the legislative session in early 2027 and will immediately notify the community of any necessary adjustments once the state finalizes its rules.
